One site, two passes, one answer
GrapevinePass covers the two mountain corridors that tie Los Angeles, Bakersfield and the high desert together: the Grapevine on I-5 over Tejon Pass, and SR-58 over Tehachapi Pass. It answers the question drivers actually ask, is it open, in one sentence, live, and then shows the cameras, chain controls, closures and forecasts behind the answer.
Where the data comes from
Everything live on this site comes from two public sources. Caltrans publishes the chain control checkpoints, the lane closure records, the overhead message sign texts, and the CCTV camera stills for Districts 6, 7 and 8 through its public data feeds; this site reads those feeds directly and republishes what they say, cleaned of formatting noise, with no hand editing. The National Weather Service provides the summit temperatures and every town forecast and alert. When a feed is unreachable, the site says so on the verdict rather than dressing up stale data.
The verdict logic is deliberately simple and is printed here so it can be checked: a corridor is closed when the closure feed carries an active full closure on its route inside the corridor's map box; a direction is closed when that closure blocks it; the chain level is the highest level posted at the corridor's checkpoints, for the Grapevine, or the announced posting, for SR-58, which has no fixed stations. When the state says nothing, the verdict is open, and the site shows the quiet signs and empty closure list to prove it.
Coverage honesty is a rule here. There is no Caltrans camera at the Tejon Pass summit, and none on the Tehachapi mountain segment. Pages say that where it matters instead of filling the gap with a plausible picture.
Who runs it
GrapevinePass is an independent driver resource published by Bright Red Design as part of a family of California and western pass condition sites. It is not a Caltrans site and does not speak for the state; always confirm conditions with Caltrans QuickMap or 511 before you drive. Contact: contact@grapevinepass.com.
