Castaic is the Grapevine's front porch: the last full services on the Los Angeles side, the lake above town, and the point where I-5 stops being a commuter freeway and starts being a mountain climb. Its weather runs a few degrees cooler than the San Fernando Valley and tells you the storm has arrived at the corridor, but not what it is doing at the top.
Truckers stage here on closure days, and the Templin Highway camera just north of town is the corridor's first frame. When Castaic is dry and Gorman is white, you are looking at the classic Grapevine shape: a valley storm that is only a mountain storm at altitude.
Driving note
From Castaic the freeway climbs continuously to Tejon Pass. There is no fuel between the Gorman exit and Lebec on the far side.
