Santa Clarita is the last city before the Grapevine and the place most Los Angeles drivers actually make the pass decision, whether they know it or not. Its weather is valley weather: warm, low, and sheltered. Nothing falling on Santa Clarita tells you what is falling at Gorman, 2,600 feet higher and less than half an hour away, and that gap is the whole reason the corridor pages on this site lead with the summit and not the city.
Read this forecast for the home end of the trip and for the SR-14 option: when the Grapevine closes, the detour starts here, north on SR-14 toward Mojave. The Grapevine verdict linked from this page is the live answer; this forecast is the local context around it.
Driving note
The grade starts about 10 minutes north, at Castaic. In a closure, SR-14 north from here is the start of the high desert detour to Mojave and SR-58.
