Lebec is the first town on the Kern County side of Tejon Pass, wrapped around the freeway services at the top of the descent, and home to Fort Tejon, the 1850s army post that guarded this same pass when it was a wagon road. Its weather is summit weather with a slight discount: a few hundred feet below the top, on the north slope, where storms linger after the south side clears.
For drivers, Lebec is the decision mirror of Gorman: the last stop before the long descent to the valley floor northbound, and the first stop after the climb southbound. The two truck escape ramp cameras are just below town, on the downgrade every Lebec resident can describe from memory.
Driving note
Northbound from Lebec, the freeway drops about 2,600 feet in 12 miles. Check brakes and gears at the top, not halfway down.
